Description
What is Hericium erinaceus?
Hericium erinaceus, also known as Lion’s Mane, is an edible mushroom that belongs to the tooth fungus group. Lion’s mane mushroom is native to Asia, North America, and Europe. Lion’s mane grows in clusters and has long spines that lend it nicknames like the pom pom mushroom, bearded tooth mushroom, satyr’s beard, bearded hedgehog mushroom, or bearded tooth fungus. In the wild, these mushrooms grow late in the summer and early fall on hardwood trees. The American Beech tree is known for being home to Lion’s mane mushroom clusters.

Hericium erinaceus has a long history of use in traditional Chinese practices. A rat study conducted in 2005 showed some compounds in the mushroom, like threitol, D-arabinitol, and palmitic acid, may have oxidation regulating benefits. More recently and more relevant to human use, is a 2013 review of scientific studies, which asserted the benefits of the mushroom by saying "This mushroom is rich in some physiologically important components, especially β-glucan polysaccharides, which may support healthy cellular function, promote immunity and health, and display neuro-protective benefits." Hericium erinaceus Benefits and Uses
May help support cognitive function

May help promote cardiovascular health

May help support mitochondrial health
What is 8:1 Extract?
Hericium erinaceus carries a multitude of polysaccharides, such as Beta glucan, heteroglycans, heteroxylans, and several cyanthane derivative triterpenes referred to as hericenone and erinacine. The 8:1 lion's mane extract is created from a dual extract solvent method using both water and ethanol. Various compounds within lions mane are only soluble in ethanol. The hericenones that promote cognitive, cardiovascular, and mitochondrial health are only ethanol soluble. Lion’s mane mushroom research has found specific hericenones believed to be responsible for these benefits. These hericenones are known as 3-hydroxyhericenone F, Hericenone B, and Hericenones C, D & E. This extract is referred to as 8:1 because you need 8kg of raw lion's mane mushroom to produce a single kilo of lions mane 8:1 extract. The hericenone and erinacine compounds are considered to be responsible for the cognitive benefits of this species.
